An appealing cottage* near Wonalancet Chapel at the foot of the White Mountains of New Hampshire on Chinook Trail, Route 113A, between Tamworth and Sandwich. Stay brookside and then go out of doors trailside to some of the best area hiking the Mount Washington Valley has to offer
The cottage has one small bedroom with two twin beds, one bathroom and shower, small studio with skylight, kitchen, living area with a day bed, and a lovely screened-in porch situated where Spring Brook joins Brook Walden. It is has heat, electricity, and local telephone included during the season. It is rented furnished, weekly or monthly from June 1 through October 30. A great retreat for artists, writers, theater folks, retired folks. The cottage is winterized and can also be rented furnished all year around, utilities paid by tenant.
*This is the homestead of author/explorer Arthur Walden, the father of the breed, Chinook, who was born on Arthur Walden's Wonalancet farm in 1917. The history of the Chinook has been passed down in letters, interviews, and by word of mouth. Admiral Byrd appointed Arthur Walden lead driver and dog trainer for Byrd's 1929 Antarctic Expedition. During the expedition, on Chinook's twelfth birthday, he wandered away and was never found. News of Chinook's death was heard round the world. Many mourned the loss of one of the greatest lead dogs in history. Route 113A still bears the name ‘The Chinook Trail' in his memory. With Chinook in lead, Walden and his "Chinook" dog sled team were the first to successfully climb Mount Washington. Walden is credited with bringing the sport of sled dog racing to the New Hampshire area, founding the New England Sled Dog Club in 1924, which is still in existence today.
